Had fun with the doggies !

First week with Spyro! He’s bit a couple people in the home and has reactivity issues out in the world.

We’re working on his relationship and response to pressure. Giving him tools to process his emotions better and regulate more efficiently. He has a lot of drive, but it is misplaced and it makes him feel uneasy when he’s fully in it.

All his behaviors show his relationship and ability to handle pressure:
-is more comfortable with fetch than tug
-struggles to posses a toy if he’s feeling too much pressure from his surroundings. Is pulled in by the chase, but cannot complete the cycle
-didn’t want to come into my space for toy or food
-freezes when he feels the leash
-has a hard time barking when asked & he has to route pressure back, but erupts into forward motion,biting, and barking when he feels too much pressure.

This week we’ve been working on:
-Response to leash pressure
-building the “speak”
-building his play
-building the pushing exercise
-getting him more comfortable with social pressure
-ignoring any weirdness and submissive behaviors and working on making life clearer for him

When dealing with behavioral issues, you have to understand the dog in front of you and ask yourself one question: Where is the energy flowing?

Cas came to us after a history of biting his prior owners and being described as “vicious.” That couldn’t be further from the dog we’ve gotten to know.

He’s improved immensely in a short period, and a lot of that comes down to two simple things:

1. Treating him like a dog.
2. Limiting the rehearsal of unwanted behaviors.

Outside of the crate, biting was never an issue with us. He’s an incredibly sweet dog.

The real work is channeling energy that’s leaking into conflict toward something more organized.

The crate had clearly become a highly charged event before he came to us. As soon as Cas realized we were heading toward the crate, he’d start putting his gloves on for the match. So we gave him the fight he needed.

Energy has to leave the way it came in.

Once that extra layer of stress has been expressed and the body softens, the dog is in a position to perceive the situation differently.

None of this is about rewards. The food is just a medium. It isn’t what creates the change. The change comes from altering the dog’s relationship to the emotional state itself.

Big little man Castiel (formerly Arrow) is our newest foster&train and has spent about a week with us. One of his rehearsed and built behaviors at his prior home was an extreme struggle loading, settling, unloading in the crate. He screamed anytime he was in the crate and bit when met with pressure or containment. All Cass needed was someone calm and unwavering. No crate games were were used in the process of this training 😉 the goal with every dog is to make them as comfortable as possible as quickly as possible.
Cass is still a puppy, but a very strong puppy. The more his prior owners fought him and released pressure randomly, the more he learned that pressure turned off by bulldozing through it. He started To bulldoze his prior family and their family dog constantly. We are building his play so that he has something healthy for all that fight and intensity, along with building his internal capacity in other areas of his life. Now that he knows the crate is somewhere to contain instead of express he’ll be feeling less internal conflict and a lot more calm. This is what happens when you place human emotions and narrative on a dog. He’s not bad or evil, he is just behaving the way he’s been molded. A learned behavior and not an inherent flaw.

If your dog is releasing large amounts of intensity, tension, and stress through play, it often doesn’t take much to create real fulfillment. This was a three minute play session, then back into relaxation. Physical exercise and exploration are still important, but you don’t have to build a monster. Especially with working breeds, it’s often far more important to teach settling than to constantly reinforce seeking, arousal, and stimulation.
Joey wouldn’t take food outside the house or engage in much play when we first got him. Imagine what he’d be channeling that energy into if we had simply assumed he had no toy drive or food drive. The energy is there. It always has to go somewhere. Our job is to help direct it into healthy, productive outlets.
